The Gear That Powers David's Voiceover Work

Untitled_edited.jpg

THE BOOTH

Thanks to a rockwool-lined interior, Dave’s 4x5’ custom-built (with his own two hands) vocal isolation booth is virtually soundproof: no echoes or room reflections inside, no unwanted sounds from outside.

NEUMANN TLM 103

A modern classic, and the choice for animation-focused studios worldwide for more than twenty years. The sound of the TLM 103 is as elegant as sparkling crystal: clear, detailed, and nuanced.

SENNHEISER MKH 416

When the job calls for more “oomph,” Dave reaches for this classic LA-studio standby to deliver a weighty, muscular low-end, without sacrificing high-end clarity. If the Neumann sparkles like crystal, this bad boy shines like a sledgehammer.

SHURE SM7B

When there’s no room for mistakes, the SM7B smoothes over minor imperfections to deliver flawless sound, take after take, every time. A favorite for gently taming powerful singing and speaking voices, and the modern gold-standard for broadcasting pros and podcasters alike.

RØDE NT1 & NT1-A

A dynamic duo that punch well above their weight, the NT1 and NT1-A share similar specs and tonal qualities to the Neumann TLM 103, and can perform flawless backup duties to record safety tracks for high-intensity acting jobs that require yelling and screaming.

FOCUSRITE ISA ONE MICROPHONE PREAMP

When sound quality is of the utmost importance, Dave relies on the tried-and-true preamp design of Sir Rupert Neve’s studio classic, giving the delicate sound of the Neumann TLM 103 a gentle touch of transformer-based heft, depth and weight.

DBX 286S CHANNEL STRIP

A regular fixture in radio stations everywhere, the 286s is the Shure SM7B’s natural partner in their native habitat. Together, they’re Dave’s not-so-secret recipe for cutting broadcast-ready deliverables when turnaround is tight, without sacrificing quality.

APOGEE DUET

The beating heart of Dave’s studio, the Apogee Duet has long been the top choice of pro producers for turning analog sound waves into digital bits and bytes, at the highest possible quality, in a form factor small enough to sit on their desk at home.
